Making the switch to professional association management – a case study

“Letting go” in Association Management is a bold step, but one that was necessitated by falling numbers and declining revenue at SONA.

“Letting go” in Association Management is a bold step, but one that was necessitated by falling numbers and declining revenue at SONA. Distinguishing the different components in management of Associations especially academic ones is a trend that is not wide-spread. Few Associations are attempting this. The speaker, as the Secretary-General and CEO of the Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA), decided to 'let go' and incorporate partnership with a professional Association management company to turn around the fortunes of the Society.

  • Benefits of the new approach – more efficient revenue collection to manage subscriptions
  • Improved communication and engagement with members
  • Creating a new executive committee and Governing Council
  • Initial outcomes and member engagement and response
