ITU launches ITU160 Gender Champions initiative to empower young women in digital transformation

In celebration of its 160th anniversary, the ITU has introduced the ITU160 Gender Champions initiative, aimed at empowering young women engaged in digital development.

In a significant move to celebrate its 160th anniversary, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched the ITU160 Gender Champions initiative, in collaboration with the Government of Canada. This initiative aims to empower young women who are actively contributing to digital transformation and development. It provides a global platform for these young women to share their insights and gain exposure at key international events, marking a pivotal opportunity in the landscape of digital technology.

The initiative will invite young women between the ages of 18 to 25, who are engaged in digital development, to attend a series of prominent events scheduled to take place in Geneva from 7 to 11 July 2025. These events include the WSIS+20 High-Level Event and the AI for Good Global Summit, alongside the commemorations for ITU’s 160th anniversary. Selected participants will have their travel and accommodation expenses covered for the duration of their stay in Geneva, facilitating their involvement in these high-profile gatherings.

The ITU160 Gender Champions initiative is not merely about attendance; it offers a unique opportunity for participants to connect with influential stakeholders in the digital and technology sectors. This engagement is further enhanced by opportunities for participants to amplify their own contributions to digital development, allowing them to actively participate in various sessions and activities. Additionally, participants will play a key role in co-designing and facilitating workshops aimed at promoting gender equality in the digital transformation landscape.

The initiative specifically encourages applications from diverse backgrounds, prioritising young women from developing countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, small island developing states, as well as young indigenous women and those with disabilities. This focus on inclusivity is intended to ensure a broad representation of voices, thereby enriching discussions and perspectives on the future of digital transformation and development.

The deadline for applications is set for 6 April 2025 at 11:59 pm CEST, marking a critical timeline for interested candidates to prepare and submit their applications. Young women who meet the age requirement and are passionate about making impactful contributions to digital technology are encouraged to apply.

The ITU has articulated that this initiative is part of its broader commitment to gender equality and inclusivity within the realm of digital transformation. The union serves as the primary global platform for nations and organisations to come together on matters concerning information and communication technologies, representing 194 national governments and over 1,000 companies and organisations.

This initiative not only exemplifies ITU's ongoing efforts to amplify the voices of those women who are leading and innovating in digital spaces, but also highlights the growing recognition of gender disparities within the technology sector. By fostering an environment where young women can showcase their talents and solutions, ITU aims to influence the trajectory of digital development on a global scale.
