Grounds Management Association launches 35 Under 35 initiative

The Grounds Management Association unveils the 35 Under 35 initiative to honour young professionals in the grounds management industry. This free programme encourages self-nominations and peer nominations, providing access to training and networking opportunities, and aims to attract new talent for the future.

The Grounds Management Association (GMA), with support from ICL, has announced the launch of a new initiative called 35 Under 35, aimed at recognising and celebrating the contributions of young professionals and volunteers in the grounds management industry. This programme seeks to honour 35 individuals under the age of 35 who have made significant impacts on the field of grounds management, an area pivotal yet often undervalued in maintaining quality green spaces for sports, recreation, and community activities.

The initiative, which is free to enter, enables both self-nominations and nominations from peers. It offers a platform for contestants to highlight their accomplishments and receive due recognition for their influence within the industry. Participants in the 35 Under 35 programme will gain exclusive access to technical and agronomic training modules developed collaboratively by the GMA and ICL technical teams, in addition to unique networking opportunities at SALTEX, a well-regarded industry exhibition.

Geoff Webb, the CEO of the Grounds Management Association, expressed the importance of this initiative, noting that “grounds management is rapidly evolving, competing with every other sector for future talent.” He elaborated that the industry's success relies on a combination of new ideas and the invaluable experience of existing grounds teams. Webb highlighted the initiative's role not only in recognising exceptional individuals but also in attracting new talent, which is crucial for fostering succession planning amid an aging workforce.

Simon Barnaby, ICL's National Key Account & Business Development Manager for the UK and Ireland—Stadia, echoed Webb's sentiments, emphasising ICL's commitment to supporting the future of turf care. “The GMA 35 Under 35 initiative is a great way to recognise young professionals already making a difference,” Barnaby stated. He noted that the programme facilitates ongoing education through training and development opportunities, allowing young professionals to build confidence and advance their careers.

The final selection of the 35 participants will be made by an expert judging panel and will be showcased across GMA's digital channels and various industry media outlets. This initiative aims to inspire the next generation of grounds professionals by providing a platform for sharing their achievements.

Nominations for the inaugural GMA 35 Under 35 will commence later this month, and individuals interested in participating can register their interest ahead of the official launch.
