British Esports Federation launches new Coach Development Framework
The British Esports Federation, the principal organisation representing esports in the United Kingdom, has announced the introduction of a Coach Development Framework and associated learning programmes aimed at improving professional standards in esports coaching and safeguarding. This significant launch took place in Sunderland on Wednesday, 12th March 2025.
In collaboration with a range of notable partners, including UK Coaching, the awarding organisation 1st4sport, the National Crime Agency, and children's charities such as UNICEF UK and the NSPCC, the federation has developed two initial online learning programmes: ‘Duty to Care in Esports’ and ‘Introduction to Esports Coaching’.
With nearly 38 million gamers identified in the UK and children increasingly aspiring to professional gaming careers, the growth of esports is solidifying its status as a mainstream activity, alongside traditional sports. This development has been further reinforced by the International Olympic Committee's recent announcement about the inaugural Olympic Esports Games scheduled for 2027, which is expected to provide a new platform for esports athletes to represent Great Britain.
Tom Dore, Vice President of the British Esports Federation, noted the lack of globally recognised professional standards in esports coaching compared to traditional sports. “While the esports industry has successful coaches linked to specific game titles, unlike traditional sport it does not currently have globally recognised professional standards for esports coaches and leaders,” he said. He also emphasised the necessity for a cohesive effort within the industry to support and protect all community members.
The Coach Development Framework serves as a unique foundation aimed at establishing global standards and development opportunities within esports. It identifies essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours that coaches and leaders need to possess, recognising the diverse nature of esports titles and their unique requirements.
Sam Mathews, Founder & CEO of Fnatic, commented on the importance of this initiative: “Esports has always been about pushing limits – whether in gameplay, strategy, or competition...if we want to stand alongside traditional sports, we need real infrastructure.” Mathews highlighted the need for structured coaching and player development initiatives, particularly given the upcoming Olympic representation of esports.
The framework includes the Coach Development Pathway, which intends to assist both aspiring and current esports coaches through varied professional development opportunities. The first two courses focus on fundamental aspects of coaching and the associated duties towards player welfare.
The 'Duty to Care in Esports' programme, offered at no cost, is centred on the moral and ethical obligations of all industry stakeholders. It provides crucial knowledge on establishing healthier, safer, and more inclusive environments within esports, structured around seven core pillars, which include Safeguarding, Child Rights, and Mental Health.
In contrast, the 'Introduction to Esports Coaching' programme, certified by UK Coaching, is tailored for both new and seasoned coaches. It covers effective coaching principles, player motivation, and the holistic development of individuals. Hayley Khan, Director of Development at UK Coaching, asserted the essential need for recognised coaching standards in esports, stating that the programme lays the groundwork for both individuals and teams to foster long-term development and success.
Chester King, President of the British Esports Federation, further encapsulated the philosophy behind these initiatives: “Effective esports coaching incorporates much more than simply game-based skills and strategies. It involves empowering the holistic development of individuals and teams in safe, healthy, positive, inclusive environments.”
The courses, 'Duty to Care in Esports' and 'Introduction to Esports Coaching', are available now through British Esports Learning, an online hub dedicated to professional development in the esports field.
