AHDB appoints Jonathan Eckley as new director of international trade development

Jonathan Eckley takes the helm at AHDB's International Trade Development, aiming to enhance export opportunities for UK red meat and dairy sectors.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has announced the appointment of Jonathan Eckley as its new Director of International Trade Development, effective immediately. In this significant role, he will lead the International Trade Development team in their efforts to create and enhance export opportunities for AHDB levy payers, primarily those involved in the red meat and dairy sectors.

Eckley has a robust background in international trade, having previously served as AHDB's Head of International Trade Development, overseeing operations across pivotal global regions, including Asia Pacific, the Americas, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). His extensive 19-year career with AHDB has equipped him with considerable expertise in export strategy and development, particularly related to the UK livestock sector.

Graham Wilkinson, Chief Executive of AHDB, expressed his enthusiasm regarding Eckley's appointment, stating, “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Jonathan as AHDB’s International Trade Development Director. His wealth of experience and industry knowledge will be invaluable in working on behalf of levy payers helping to ensure exports of our world-class red meat and dairy produce continue to deliver growth and value.” This sentiment underscores AHDB's commitment to expanding the international market presence of UK agricultural products.

Eckley himself commented on the strategic importance of international trade, especially highlighting the export significance for red meat and dairy sectors in 2024, which were valued at approximately £3.5 billion. “It’s important we have access to a broad portfolio of markets and AHDB’s role is critical in providing technical support, evidence and in-market insight to support the industry’s global ambitions. I’m looking forward to leading the team in helping our red meat and dairy produce thrive on the global stage,” he stated.

International trade development is integral to the AHDB’s mission, particularly for livestock levy payers. The organisation plays a pivotal role in facilitating export processes, which includes managing export health certification, securing site approvals, and conducting inspection audits by overseas officials. It also actively engages in promoting trade in vital markets, participating in trade shows, and coordinating trade missions to foster international relationships and market access.

In the past months, AHDB's efforts have included notable participation in various international exhibitions such as FoodEx in Tokyo, Gulfood in Dubai, SIRHA in Lyon, and Expo Carnes y Lácteos in Monterrey. Looking ahead, a substantial inward trade mission for the red meat sector is being organised for summer 2024. Furthermore, AHDB and its sectors are scheduled to have a prominent presence at ANUGA, which is recognised as one of the largest international trade shows, set to take place in Cologne in October.

The overarching objective remains the same: to ensure that the UK's red meat and dairy products continue to make a considerable mark on the global market, supporting the economic growth of these vital agricultural sectors. Through collaborations with the UK Government and the industry, AHDB aims to create new opportunities and enhance the competitive edge of UK-produced livestock products on the international stage.
