About the role

The Policy Manager at SmartEn is responsible for developing, managing, and advocating policy strategies that align with the company’s mission to promote smart energy solutions. This role involves analyzing legislative and regulatory developments, building relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring SmartEn’s voice is effectively represented in relevant policy forums. You will be part of a dynamic, professional international team in the EU area in Brussels. You will report to the Head of Policy and will work in strong cooperation with our broad membership of engaged companies.

Responsibilities

Policy Development and Advocacy:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive policy strategies that support SmartEn's mission and goals.
  • Monitor and analyze policy changes, regulatory frameworks, and legislative trends affecting the smart energy sector.
  • Draft policy briefs, position papers, and consultation responses to influence decision-making processes.
  • Advocate for policies that promote smart energy integration and the development of renewable energy technologies.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with government officials, regulators, industry groups, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent SmartEn in meetings, conferences, and workshops, ensuring the organization's interests are voiced.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including communications, business development, and technical teams, to align policy positions with the overall business strategy.
  • Act as a spokesperson for SmartEn in policy discussions and media interactions, as needed.

Research and Analysis:

  • Research energy policies, market trends, and technological advancements to inform SmartEn’s policy positions.
  • Analyze the potential impact of proposed policies on SmartEn’s operations and the broader smart energy industry.
  • Stay informed about best practices and global developments in smart energy and sustainability.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure SmartEn’s operations comply with relevant regulations and standards in the smart energy sector.
  • Provide advice to senior management on policy-related risks and opportunities.
  • Lead internal policy review processes and ensure that organizational policies are aligned with external regulatory requirements.

Reporting and Communication:

  • Prepare reports, presentations, and updates for the executive team and board of directors on policy developments.
  • Develop and maintain communication materials that clearly articulate SmartEn’s policy positions to external audiences.
  • Assist in preparing public statements and speeches for SmartEn leadership on policy matters.

Skills, Competencies & Experience

Desired, Skills and Experience:

  • 4 years of relevant professional experience, with a solid knowledge of the EU decision-making process and a broad network of relevant contacts;
  • Good understanding of the EU energy system, energy markets, and the role of flexible consumers/prosumers in supporting cost-effective decarbonization;
  • Capability to translate EU regulatory developments into business impacts for our members;
  • Analytical, curious, pragmatic, and flexible attitude. Willingness to deep dive into complex and/or technical policy files;
  • Skilled in drafting position papers, replies to public consultations, reports, and articles;
  • Strong organizational, networking, and communication skills;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required, other European languages are an asset

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in public policy, energy policy, law, or a related field.

  • You need to have a permit to work in Brussels Belgium.
