About the role

Head of Business Development and Programmes is a new role providing strategic direction to the programs teams, securing income to fund the program portfolio, and ensuring that all our work aligns with our values and contributes to our organizational goals.  They hold lead responsibility for developing, managing, and securing a pipeline of restricted funding and partnerships to ensure that the program portfolio grows year-on-year in line with FIGO strategy and plans.

They are also responsible for leading our approach to local partner organizations (primarily our member associations) and ensuring that they are equipped to comply with our policies and procedures. The role also has responsibility for a variety of restricted funding of various sizes, sources, and durations, which make up a key part of organizational income. As a member of the Senior Leadership team, they will play a key role in the design and implementation of organizational strategies and policies.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Provide leadership in the development and execution of FIGO’s program strategy, ensuring consistency and innovation in our program design and scaling the impact of FIGO and our partner's work.
  • Build and cultivate trusted relationships and networks with partners and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor relevant international developments about FIGO activities and purpose. Support the organization’s research dissemination, policy, and campaign work, including dynamic collaboration and liaison with FIGO’s scientific committees.
  • Ensure alignment of the programs team to organizational strategies, policies, and procedures and down-streaming these to in-country partners where relevant.

Business Development:

  • Ensure that FIGO develops and maintains a steady pipeline of grant-funded opportunities and be responsible for securing new income for FIGO.
  • Ensure comprehensive monitoring, intelligence gathering, and networking (by colleagues throughout FIGO, as well as the Programmes team) such that FIGO can anticipate, identify, and pursue relevant opportunities.
  • Ensure submission of high-quality, competitive concepts and proposals, including budgets.
  • Ensure systems and processes are in place to support program development, eg intel gathering, analysis of win rates, the capture of donor
  • information and trends, and capacity statements.

Programme Management:

  • Assume overall responsibility for FIGO’s program portfolio, ensuring sound management and administration of projects and programs by our procedures and those of funders.
  • Ensure the fulfillment of due diligence, safeguarding, and other requirements for FIGO’s work and our partner organizations in line with FIGO’s and donor procedures.
  • Oversee and support the monitoring and evaluation of FIGO’s programs to ensure they meet our goals, the needs of participants, and the requirements of funders, and that lessons learned are incorporated into future activities.
  • Ensure cost recovery is fully budgeted and contracted and is by the financial guidance provided by the FIGO Head of Finance.

Team Management:

  • Manage the Programme team and (currently) three direct reports. This includes ensuring the proper preparation and implementation of work plans, undertaking staff appraisals, and providing strategic guidance.
  • Ensure that staff follow FIGO’s effective methods of project management.
  • Ensure that staff are fully aware of and comply with the Staff Handbook and relevant FIGO internal policies, including specific safeguards, safety and security arrangements, overseas fieldwork guidelines, financial procedures, etc.
  • Support an organizational culture of good management practice, based on values and respect.
  • Adhere to FIGO’s principles and values in promoting good relationships with colleagues and partners, by treating them fairly and with empathy, and providing them with opportunities to grow and develop, whilst ensuring that they treat others reciprocally.

Organizational Support:

  • Part of the Leadership Team and play a full part in budget setting, effective organizational leadership, and delivering the organizational goals.
  • Represent the organization in relevant local, national, and international fora, in consultation with the CEO.
  • Conduct relevant media outreach in consultation with the CEO.
  • Prepare and oversee to publication of standard research studies, briefings, web content, and other materials.
  • Supervise the work of consultants, researchers, and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Perform other tasks as may from time to time be requested by the CEO
  • Comply with FIGO Policies and Procedures.
  • Contribute to the work of the department and team and FIGO.
  • Travel to / attend meetings and events (and represent FIGO at external meetings and events if required).

Skills, Competencies & Experience

Knowledge & Experience:

  • At least 5 years of proven track record in successfully managing complex programs and grants
  • At least 5 years of proven track record in securing international development funding from institutional donors, eg bilateral and multilateral donors and foundations.
  • Extensive experience working in international development and excellent knowledge of environmental issues and human rights.
  • Proven leadership and line management experience, as well as strategy design and implementation, stakeholder management, and external representation, are key elements of the role
  • Demonstrable experience in change management. 
  • Experience building strong customer relations, promoting ideas, and influencing decision-makers.

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in French or Spanish could be an advantage.

  • Undergraduate Degree in level Qualification and Equivalent
