About the role
Global Director of Development is a senior leadership role that plays a pivotal part in driving ClientEarth’s mission to address environmental challenges through legal and advocacy work. This role focuses on developing and implementing the organization’s global fundraising strategy to ensure sustainable growth and financial health.
This position will play a pivotal role in ensuring ClientEarth's ability to continue driving its environmental protection and policy advocacy mission. By securing both restricted and unrestricted funding, the Director of Development will directly contribute to the organization’s capacity to expand its initiatives, advance its legal and policy work, and maintain long-term financial sustainability.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and oversee the organization’s global fundraising strategy, aligning it with ClientEarth's broader objectives.
- Lead a diverse, multi-regional development team, fostering a culture of collaboration and high performance.
Fundraising and Donor Engagement:
- Expand and diversify funding streams, including corporate partnerships, major donors, trusts, foundations, and government grants.
- Build and nurture long-term relationships with high-value donors and key stakeholders.
- Represent ClientEarth at events, networking opportunities, and high-level donor meetings.
Team Management:
- Manage and mentor the global development team, ensuring clarity in roles and professional growth.
- Coordinate with regional development leads to align local efforts with global strategies.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with the senior leadership team to integrate development goals with the organization’s overarching priorities.
- Collaborate with program teams to identify funding opportunities and craft compelling cases for support.
Monitoring and Reporting:
- Track fundraising performance against goals, preparing regular reports for the CEO, Board, and stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and organizational standards in all fundraising activities.
Skills, Competencies & Experience
- Proven track record in senior-level fundraising or business development roles, preferably within the environmental or non-profit sectors. Experience managing large, multi-regional teams is essential.
- Exceptional leadership and people management abilities.
- Strong financial acumen and ability to manage budgets effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and engage donors and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated success in securing multi-million-dollar funding from diverse sources.
- Knowledge of a deep understanding of fundraising best practices, legal regulations, and trends in the philanthropic sector.
- Passionate about environmental sustainability and ClientEarth’s mission to use the law as a tool for systemic change.
