In September 2016 the European Society of Immunodeficiencies (ESID) launched its new Education Portal. In May 2017 the portal won the Best eLearning/Online Education category at the International & European Association Awards

Recognising the importance of online learning to their members ESID continue to expand. They are adding new learning materials and developing more interactive and innovative modules to share practical experiences with their members.

Like other medical professionals, ESID members need to maintain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, professional standards and abilities required in their working lives, while also learning about the latest developments and how they apply to the care they provide.

The new portal meets this need, giving members constant access to highly valuable content and extending the learning impact of the societies congress and summer school. Online medical education is not replacing attendance at live medical meetings for ESID members, it is another educational opportunity available to learners.

It is easy to access, available on demand, affordable and scalable to individual objectives and schedules. By offering user-friendly and innovative online learning materials and personalised tools, ESID has increased its reputation as a quality educator that understands and responds to the changing needs of its current and potential members.

One of the key features of the ESID Online Educational Portal are the interactive and innovative online case-studies. ESID has developed case-studies where actual learning outcomes are measured and shown to improve learning, knowledge, competence and the performance of learners.

“The ESID Education Online portal contains a library housing ESID training materials, congress materials, e.g. e-posters and congress webcasts, interactive Continuing Medical Education (CME)/CPD accredited case-studies and other recommended online educational materials,” says Diana van Brakel, Manager Continuing Education at Kenes Education which is working closely with ESID on the portal.

“Members undergo short pre- and post-tests and self-evaluation to assess their knowledge of patient cases. After successful completion of the interactive case-studies learners will be able to obtain their CME/CPD credits by downloading a personalised certificate.”

As for the future, ESID is currently looking into its continuation plans, evaluating current trends and the effectiveness of current user activity to continue being at the forefront of medical education for current and potential members. Diana concludes that the aim is to expand the ESID Educational Portal with additional learning materials. This prestigious recognition acknowledges the hard work and adaptation of associations working on providing newer forms of content on demand and expanding learning opportunities for their members.
