Why are awards so important to associations? What are the benefits of entering awards? We asked a selection of association executives.
Professional and industry awards recognise excellence, best practice and innovation. They help associations benchmark their performance, publicise and highlight the good and valuable work that associations do. Awards build credibility among stakeholders, demonstrating to staff and members the value and importance of the role of associations. They also help to inspire employees and strengthen public profiles.
What’s more, all this is verified by scientific research. Studies have shown that success breeds success. Awards act as an incentive and reward, raising status and productivity, increasing motivation among employees and attracting attention from peers.
We talked to a number of associations about why it is important to enter awards, raise standards and ensure that excellence is recognised.
“On the learning side, for me the value of the awards that ACCA-X has won for our online courses is that it gives students confidence in the courses, so they can focus their energies into learning, rather than worrying if they’ve made the right course selection!”
Valli Rajagopal, Head of Learning, ACCA-X
“Awards are a key indicator of success and achievement, for staff, associations and their members. They are a vital way of letting us, and the world, know what great work goes on inside associations. Sometimes we struggle to demonstrate impact and effectiveness to ourselves, let alone our members and our directors. So awards are a great celebration and clear evidence of the impact we have. And you don’t have to win, just being shortlisted is a clear achievement. With our recent win we certainly demonstrated to our association just how hard staff have been working behind the scenes.”
Andy Burman, CEO British Dietetic Association
“Inspiration of other associations is key. Awards give the perfect opportunity to spread best practice and accomplish good results."
“We were runner up for the best new website. We used this to promote our organisation and especially inspire others to put more effort into their websites.”
Lodewijk Klootwijk, Director European Golf Course Owners Association.
“Being able to measure our impact and benchmark our performance against other member associations is important for us. Entering a selection of valued association awards provides us with a focus and enables us to do this."
We've been delighted to win the following awards in recent years:
Memcom Member engagement award - winners 2015
Trade union congress - best website - highly commended 2015
Associations Congress - Best social media campaign 2016.
“We have further celebrated these successes by promoting our achievements to our members which again highlights our standing within the sector.”
Milly Durrant. Head of Member Services, British Dietetic Association
